MCATSIA's Policy Initiatives

MCATSIA's work is aimed at informing and guiding the direction of national Indigenous policy and shaping the implementation of COAG's reform agenda.

Broadening the Indigenous Governance Skills Base
MCATSIA has examined the need to expand the pool of skilled board members and managers in Indigenous community organisations.  The project's final report is now available.

Strengthening Indigenous Corporate Governance
MCATSIA members are investigating the implementation of models to strengthen Indigenous corporate governance with a view to preventing organisations failing or entering administration.

MCATSIA Population Projects
In response to emerging demographic trends, MCATSIA developed a draft paper including examination of the issues relating to emerging demographic trends in Indigenous populations. The paper also considered gaps in existing census and administrative data, particularly as they relate to informing the Overcoming Indigenous Disadvantage (OID) framework. MCATSIA commissioned Population and Diversity: Policy Implications of Emerging Indigenous Demographic Trends from Dr John Taylor of the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research (CAEPR) at the Australian National University.

In response to the findings of this paper, MCATSIA is supporting a three year research project entitled the MCATSIA Population Projects. The work is being undertaken by a team at CAEPR.  Findings are being published on a dedicated MCATSIA Population Projects webpage, hosted by CAEPR.

The most recent paper published under the MCATSIA Population Projects is Indigenous temporary mobilities and service delivery in regional service centres: A West Kimberley case study by S Prout and M Yap.
